Walking and weight loss go hand in hand. Walking is an inexpensive, healthy form of exercise and requires no equipment other than a good pair of walking shoes and comfortable loose fitting clothes. Walking is one of the most effective exercises for burning calories and toning your body. A fast walk over a longer distance can use as much energy as a shorter jog or run. Your body needs more energy on hilly walk than if you take a flat route.
Fortunately walking has less impact on your body, especially your joints, than running. The best walkers straighten their knees and move with a straight back as this exerts less force on the rest of their body.
There are different kinds of walking. A leisurely stroll helps maintain a healthy body but has little impact on bringing about weight loss. A helpful yardstick to guide the amount and pace of walking for weight loss is to walk far enough and fast enough to cause a sweat. Power walking where you walk too fast to talk, is a good example of a walking and weight loss combination.
If you have been without exercise for some time you will need to start walking slowly and for a short distance for about 20 minutes every day. Notice how this walk becomes easier over time and how you can walk faster. Increase the distance you travel in the same time and when you’ve met this challenge you may consider extending your walking time.
More sophisticated walkers who enjoy the low impact of walking but enjoy greater challenges, sometimes walk with ankle weights, a weighted backpack or even carry weights which they lift in unison with their walk. This adds to the energy demands on their bodies and demonstrates walking and weight loss at another level. These walkers often attach mp3 players to their arms and listen to music or downloaded audio programs as they exercise.
Reaching the heights of effective walking and weight loss is an achievable goal for many as they work towards a healthier body and a happier life. Daily walking can be a year round exercise because as soon as weather conditions diminish, healthy walkers who want to maintain a high metabolic rate, jump on their treadmill inside and keep the pace of their fitness walk 'up there' until the sun re-appears.
