Whats BMI got to do with my Weight Loss

Whats BMI is a good question to ask if your are concerned about your weight and your health.  BMI stands for Body Mass Index and is the result of a calculation using your weight and your height.  This measurement is used to assess whether your weight may be putting your health at risk and whether you need to lose weight to stay healthy. 

BMI scores don’t however, take in to account your fat measurement or where fat is stored in your body and they can be impacted on by your age, muscularity and your body frame.  As we age, we lose bone mass and muscle and this can make our BMI score less reliable.  So, the predictability of the state of your health using a BMI can vary depending on these factors.

Whats BMI in relation to my body asked by an athlete can also bring a different response to the same question asked by a non-athlete.  Athletes generally have a higher BMI score as have more developed muscle and muscle weighs more than fat.

  


BMI is only one way of deciding whether or not you need to lose weight.  Some researchers have found that the amount of fat around your waist may be a better way to predict whether you have an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and even some cancers.

Although the BMI is a simple screening tool for deciding on an individual’s health determined by his or her weight there are other indicators we should look for.  The time we should be most concerned about our weight is when we start gaining it or when we realize that we have gained it.  The most important measurement we need to take is around our waist using a tape measure.  The outcome of this is, interestingly enough generally close to our BMI.

So the answer to the question whats BMI is worth knowing in relation to your body and your health, but it is not the only way to measure your good health.  Always consider your BMI score at the same time as you measure the circumference of your waist and assess your healthy (or not) lifestyle choices reflected in what you eat and how often you regularly exercise.
